Kitchen Safety
Friendship Adventures Recipes Learning Fun Stuff
Safety first!
.................................................................................................... The kitchen is a marvelous place and a good baker knows how important kitchen safety is. If it’s hot, sharp or uses electricity, be sure to ask an adult for help. Charlotte loves to bake, but she always remembers to ask for help with the oven and the stovetop.

Kitchen Safety
Most cakes, pies and cookies can be made by hand mixing. But when it comes to frostings, whipped cream and meringue, the results are often better and much faster with an electric mixer. Always ask an adult for help, and keep fingers and spoons out of the way until the mixer has stopped. Be mindful of electric sockets, sharp scissors and knives. They are best handled by an adult.

Hi! My name is Charlotte. I’m in Miss Wooly’s class at Blossomdale School. Getting good grades is really important to me, so I study every day and try my best to pay attention in class. I’m pretty good at spelling, but science is my best subject! After school, my most favorite thing to do is bake, especially with Grandma and Shannon. They are my best friends! We love baking things from scratch and trying new recipes. Grandma says the best thing anyone can share is their happiness and that you should never wait to tell someone you love them. Tulips are my favorite flower.

Cake Assembly
Pan Preparation
a cake turntable is great for decorating!
I especially like the parchment method because nothing sticks.
.................................................................................................... Preparing your pans is an important part of baking. This ensures your treats can be removed without sticking or crumbling. There are three ways to prepare pans, based on what you have: Parchment paper method (Charlotte’s favorite) 1. Unroll a small amount of paper. 2. Place your pan on the paper and trace a line around the pan with a pencil. 3. Cut inside of the line to make the shape. 4. Place the cut shape inside the pan. * Parchment is a moisture-resistant, non-stick paper used for baking.

2. Remove loose crumbs.
3. Place one cake layer on a plate or cake board. This will be the bottom layer.
1. Have an adult cut the rounded part off the top of each layer to make it flat.
....................................................................................................
5. Spread evenly on the top, avoiding the sides.
4. Spread approximately 1 cup of frosting on this layer.
6. Place the cut side of the top layer over the bottom.

Hi! My name is Shannon. My family moved to Blossomdale this year, and I feel really, really lucky to have made so many new friends! My Mom says the best way to have good friends is to BE a good friend. I try to do that. One of the things I love to do is grow flowers in the garden. I feel so happy when I’m gardening. I practiced a lot and now I’m pretty good at it. Flowers just need fresh water, sunshine and love! Just like you and me! I go to ballet twice a week and I’m super excited my best friend Charlotte will be joining our class. We can go together!

Washing Up
Getting Ready to Bake
well done, charlotte!
make sure you have everything you need for the recipe.
everything is squeaky clean now, grandma!
.................................................................................................... After baking, Charlotte likes to make the kitchen shine. Here are the steps she takes: 1. Scrape crumbs into the kitchen compost bin. 2. Put the drain stopper in the sink 3. Add one squirt of dish liquid into the sink.
.................................................................................................... Baking is fun and easy, especially when you prepare ahead. That way, you won’t have any surprises in the middle. 1. Read the recipe from start to finish before you begin. 2. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. 3. Put all the ingredients you need on the counter, close to where you will be mixing.
